How to Reach Us: No GPS? No Problem!

Step-by-Step Directions

Driving from the International Airport
to San Ignacio & Casa Santa Maria
  1. Mile 0-Set your odometer to zero when you leave the airport car park – or note the mileage.

  2. Mile 1.7-Turn left (north) at the Northern Hwy. junction. Keep an eye out for all the ‘speed-bumps’ or ‘sleeping policemen’ we have in Belize – some are not sign-posted.

  3. Mile 6.3-Turn left at junction - sign-posted “BURRELL BOOM”.

  4. Mile 18.8-Take the first exit to your right (west) at the roundabout on the George Price Highway (formerly Western Highway). In case you are not familiar with roundabouts, the traffic from the left has priority.

  5. Mile 51.7-This is the Hummingbird Highway junction that leads to Belmopan and the south of the country. Carry on straight ahead and over the bridge at Roaring Creek if you are going to San Ignacio or Santa Elena.

  6. Mile 72- You are now in Santa Elena, the twin town of San Ignacio. You will see a large sign here saying AGUADA HOTEL.

  7. There is now a bypass around San Ignacio! - There is a “roundabout” as you enter Santa Elena (Roundabout has a LARGE Santa Elena Sign), if you take the first exit off the roundabout (marked to San Ignacio), it will take you around the core. You will cross a new bridge and end up at an intersection with a graveyard on your left and a Junior College on the right-hand side.

  8. Travel up the hill, across Bullet Tree Road. You will end up at a traffic circle - take the first right on the traffic circle ….heading to Succotz and Benque. ( Uno Gas Station will be one you're left when u turn).

  9. There are 5 speed bumps in Succotz.

  10. You will see the little market in Succotz on the right with little gifts to buy; this is where the ferry takes you and your car to Xunantunich, a very popular Mayan site.

  11. Keep driving straight, and you will arrive at Benque Viejo del Carmen. The paved road curves to the left, or you can drive straight into Benque. Keep left.

  12. Follow the main boulevard around the sharp left turn indicated towards the border with Guatemala. The boulevard is divided by a median. Along the boulevard, you will pass three-speed bumps. Turn left at the Daisy Market.

  13. Continue straight ahead (stay right); the pavement ends after a few hundred yards and it is a gravel road from here on.

  14. Look at your odometer, Better in Belize (BIB) is ten miles (10.5 miles) straight up this road. The road curves and bends and dips, but we are there, do not turn off this road. Others before you have done this and have gotten lost. To confuse matters further, this road is alternately known as Mollejon Road, Hydro Road, Arenal Road and the Benque Road depending with whom you are speaking!

  15. The road from Benque Viejo to Better in Belize is a gravel road, so take your time. Depending on the time of the year and when it has been scraped, it could be rough. This leg of the trip is normally 30 to 35 minutes but could be up to 45 minutes.

  16. Follow this (Mollejon Road) road without taking any turns. You will see signposts. At Mile 2 on your left, you will see the Pousitania Land Art Park; at Mile 7, El Mirador Restaurant; at Mile 8 you will encounter the signpost for the entrance to Che Chem Hah cave. At Mile 8.5, on the left, you will see a small sign with a donkey on it which is the sign to the Martz Farm, our next-door neighbours.

  17. We are located at Mile 10.5 (approximately 16.8 kilometres from Benque) on the left side of Mollejon Road. When you have arrived at Better in Belize, on your left you will see a large wooden side that says “Welcome to Better In Belize”. Turn left at this sign and follow the road into the development.

  18. Once you arrive at the "Better in Belize" Sign, turn LEFT into the village, and through the gates.

  19. **Once through the gates, I like to engage the 4-wheel drive for safety.

  20. Proceed past the three homes on your left. Proceed straight ahead to the "T" intersection, then turn RIGHT and follow the "Casa Santa Maria" signs to the house.

A Few Tips

  • Watch out for Speed Bumps! Belize loves speed bumps.

  • Double-check your rental vehicle for spare tires and tools for a change, etc.

  • There could be several "Police Stops" on your trip. Police are mainly looking for Insurance (displayed on your windshield). they may also ask for your driver's licence. The Stops are mainly for tourist safety and having a presence.

  • At the top of the 10.5-mile road, there is a Police/Customs/Military post. They are mainly concerned with travellers headed to Arenal Border (Guatemala). I've never been stopped, just a wave through.

  •  the 10.5-mile road was grated in November and should be an easy drive for you, just drive slow and safe.

  • ***SPECIAL NOTICE*** According to Walter (Manager)-- some rental vehicles are being equipped with GPS Tracking devices now! Apparently to stop rental vehicles from crossing the border into Guatemala.

  • Casa Santa Maria is close to the border with Guatemala, so apparently some guests had the GPS equipment shut down their vehicle, as it thought the car was entering Guatemala.

  • ***So....make sure you inform the rental agency you use that you will be travelling down the MOLLEJON Road, outside of Benque Viejo. This is a NEW issue just a warning! Thanks, Jim
